Sprinkled With Liv

Birthdays = celebration + friends and family + presents + birthday cake + fun! What do birthdays and math equations have in common? If you said Miss Olivia Johnson, then Ding! Ding! Ding!, you would be correct! Today Olivia turns 25! With this big milestone birthday, I thought it would be fitting to share a few great stories of my good friend and roommate, Liv.

Liv and I met in college. It was my freshman year and Liv’s sophomore year. She transferred to Iowa after studying a year at Drake University. We went through sorority recruitment together and ended up in the same house, Kappa Alpha Theta. Throughout our time at Iowa, we made many wonderful memories. However, it wasn’t until just over a year ago when we got very close. I was a senior in college and Liv was one year out, student teaching in Des Moines. I had just accepted a job offer in Des Moines and was looking for a roommate. I reached out to Liv, and a few months later, we were off running throughout Des Moines in search for the perfect apartment we would soon call home.

Over the last sixteen months, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Liv more and more. I can honestly say I have yet to find someone as kindhearted and genuine as her. Nor, have I found someone with such a perfect career match. Liv is a Kindergarten teacher, and boy is she a Kindergarten teacher! “Potty, snacks, tummy and Sammy” are common words spoken by Miss Johnson in our home. Even after spending a day full of tiny humans, she still comes home and is as happy and chipper as ever.

To show you just how great Liv is, I asked her younger sister, Tori, to share a few of her favorite memories of Liv, and you’ll find these stories sum her up perfectly.

One of my favorite memories of Liv is when we both went to the same overnight camp as kids. Liv would check on me a lot, even though we were in different cabins with different friends, just to make sure I was doing ok. She even told my counselor to make sure I was getting enough hugs!

Another memory that I love is that when we moved into a different house where our rooms were connected by an adjacent bathroom, Liv started the tradition of shouting and waving “goodnight, I love you” through the connecting hall every night. We would still wave and say it in high school.

You can usually find Liv spread out in our apartment working on crafts for her classroom, reading, spending time with her adorable boyfriend Sam (or as Liv calls him, Sammy), popping popcorn (her nightly snack), going to yoga, or my personal favorite, baking!

Yes that’s right, Liv is also a baker! She has a baking blog called Sprinkled With Liv and, yes, the blog is just as cute as the name. Here you’ll find the latest updates of her life along with a delicious treat. I always love reading her posts and being her personal taste tester for all her treats.  As you can imagine, our apartment turns to a mini bakery when she and I are on our baking kick. Flour, sugar, baking soda, sprinkles, basically any essential baking ingredient take up TWO full cupboards in our kitchen!

We usually don’t need a special event or celebration to whip up some cookies or brownies. However, today we do have something big to celebrate, LIV’S 25TH BIRTHDAY!!

I decided to make Liv sprinkled sugar cookies for her birthday. Everything about this cookie reminds me of Liv, beautiful/fun sprinkles on top with a soft spot in the middle.

Follow the simple recipe below if  you’d like to celebrate along!

Sprinkled With Liv
